Why Are They So Sad?

I sat beside Susan while her mother Mary rushed into the living room to phone for an ambulance. As Susan lay on the bed I could hear her breathing becoming shallower and more erratic. It was heart-breaking watching her young life ebbing away but I had to stay strong. I thought back over the years I had known her. She was such a happy child who enjoyed life and had such love for her parents and others. Her friends loved being around her and she seemed to bring so much happiness to the lives of those around her.
In the dim glow of the bedside lamp the little girl once so full of life and fun now looked so weak and vulnerable. I gently touched her hand and she momentarily half opened her eyes and looked at me and smiled before drifting back into unconsciousness once again.
I could hear Mary talking on the phone to the medics then running into the hall to unlock the front door. She came back into the room with tears streaming down her face and sat beside Susan sobbing and holding her hand telling her quietly how much she loved her and that everything would be alright.
It was not long before we heard sirens in the distance and shortly afterwards the sound of the ambulance stopping outside. Mary ran sobbing into the hallway to greet the medics and bring them to Susan’s room. The medics were highly trained, dedicated and efficient and brought their backpacks full of equipment into the room and immediately set to work but I knew it was no use.
Minutes passed as the medics tried everything they could to keep Susan alive then the soft beeps from their equipment ceased. There were several seconds of deathly silence before the room filled with the sound of a shrieking alarm.
Mary started screaming hysterically and collapsed on Susan’s chest before one of the medics gently lifted her back up and helped her into the hallway so the other could work quickly to try and resuscitate Susan’s lifeless body but it was no use.
Still sitting beside her I reached out my hand and gently touched her forehead and, as I did so, she opened her eyes wide, looked directly at my face and smiled. I stood up and as I held out my hand she got up out of bed and stood by my side.
“Why are they so sad?” asked Susan looking up at me.
“Because they don’t understand” I replied as I picked her up in my arms.
Susan wrapped her arms around my neck as I stretched out my wings. She had passed from her world into mine and now it time for me to take her to her new home.
